ADOPT A RESOLUTION APPOINTING MELANIE TAPLIN TO SERVE ON THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION FOR A TERM EXIRING ON MARCH 27, 2020.  


 Staff has prepared a Resolution appointing Alternate Commissioner Melanie Taplin to a full seat on the Human Relations Commission (HRC) for a term expiring on March 27, 2020.  

BACKGROUND


On March 2, 2017 HRC Commissioner Yesenia Molinar submitted her letter of resignation effective March 1, 2017 vacating her seat as a full commissioner for the remainder of her term. 



DISCUSSION

In accordance with Government Code Section 54973, the City Clerk posted a Notice of Unscheduled Vacancy on March 2, 2017 at City Hall and on the City's website at www.unioncity.org. (Attachment A)

 

Board and commission members are appointed by the Mayor with approval of the City Council.  At the request of Mayor Dutra-Vernaci, a resolution has been prepared appointing current  alternate commissioner Melanie Taplin to serve as the full time commissioner on the HRC for the remaining term vacated by Commissioner Molinar, expiring March 27, 2020.



FISCAL IMPACT

The City provides a stipend of $39 per meeting, up to $78 per month, for each meeting attended by Commissioner or Alternate Commissioner. Funds were appropriated with the adoption of the current budget to support the payment of meeting stipends.



RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends City Council adopt the resolution appointing Melanie Taplin to serve on the Human Relations Commission for a term expiring March 27, 2020.
